Matam Festival Matam is commemorated by the Shi'a as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Shi'a Muslims in India participate in a blood-letting ceremony in honor of Husayn ibn Ali.
